We reminded Elsie that Dr. Sadler had never requested Sir Hubert to remove his name from the petition and ours, of course, had not been withdrawn. Elsie laughed and said that of course Dr. Sadler would naturally treat Sir Hubert differently than other Forum members in appreciation of his reputation. However, if it was right for the others to take their names off the petition, it was right for him to remove his also.
Elsie spoke of Billâs obviously trying to be less egotistical and more humble in his attitude in his class work of late. She feels he must have received a reprimand for his conduct from some source. Elsie also spoke of Mrs. Githens, saying she had seen her recently, and Mrs. Githens had practically lost all faith in Dr. Sadler.
Martha phoned Mrs. Gusler later to inquire about her absence from todayâs Forum and learned that a family death had called her out of town. Later in the week, Martha reached Mrs. Gusler and found it was her half-sister Frances, whom we met last summer, who had suddenly died in Angola [Indiana].

FORUMâPaper 100:
âRELIGION IN HUMAN EXPERIENCEâ
Bill read the paper today, entitled âReligion and Life Experienceâ [sic]. It made a distinction between religion and theology, stating that true religion was the growth or evolution of the soul, and theology was a belief.
The paper had been greatly enlarged and revised. We recognized certain parts of it, particularly a word picture of primitive man which Bill himself remarked about. This word picture was used in connection with a statement made concerning the necessity for human tolerance and understanding of oneâs fellows. The first picture given was that of a hairy-chested cave man, feet spread wide apart, arm upraised with a menacing club, eyes fixed and staring straight ahead. Not a very ennobling example of the human race. But now widen the horizon and witness the great saber-toothed tiger in front of him and behind him a cowering mother and two children. Thus when you are enabled to comprehend the motive of this cave man, you are inspired to place a high value upon him. (The word âfilthyâ was used as a part of the description of this cave man, which seemed out of place to us. This paper smacks of much editing and its phraseology in part is strongly characteristic of Dr. Sadlerâs own form of expression.)
